The Wedding
Scene
1:
Shows
a white house with a black roof; a cherry tree blossoms outside and the lawn is perfectly green and manicured.
Abigail (o.s.):
Well hello, and welcome back to my brother’s
and my home. The last time I spoke with you I told you the story of how my brother
and best friend and I kicked out the two trouble makers in our comfortable household.
This time, luckily, we have a more pleasant story, one that is truly a joy to be able to tell…the story of the
marriage of my brother and his wife, Martha.

Yes Abigail?
Abigail:
*laughingly* I think you’re forgetting
something my dear brother.
Peter:
*confused* I am?
Abigail:
*in a whisper* Look in you’re hand.
*Peter looks at ring box*
Peter:
*flustered* Oh right…um, Martha,
here’s you’re engagement ring. *places on her finger*
Martha:

*blushes* Thanks Martha!
*Entire

Scene
3:
*Abigail
and Peter are talking in the living room of their house*
Peter:
Oh my g-d Abby, she said yes! SHE SAID YES!
Abigail:
*knowingly* I told you she would didn’t
I?
Peter:
Well, yeah, but…
Abigail:
But you didn’t believe me, I understand.
Peter:
Abby…
Abigail:
Yes?
Peter:
It’s just; I wish you could know
how happy I am right now!
Abigail:
*walks over and puts her arm around Peter*
Well, I may not know quite how happy you are now, but I can guess!
Peter:
You realize your joy for us is stronger
than you’re joy for anything of yours?
Abigail:
Yeah, you have a problem with that?
Peter:
*laughing* Not at all!
*End Scene*
Scene
4:
*Martha
and Emily are talking in Martha’s bedroom*
Emily:
Martha, I’m so happy for you, you’ll
be the first of all of us to get married!
Martha:
I know, I can’t wait! The weddings so soon though.
Emily:
Why did you guys decided to have the ceremony
so quickly?
Martha:
To tell you the truth Em, I have no idea,
but that’s the way it worked out.
Emily:
Only you and Peter would pull that stunt.
Martha:
*teasingly* I resent that!
Emily:
*laughingly* Sorry!
Martha:
There is one favour I would like to ask
you Emily.
Emily:
Yes?
Martha:
Well I need to find a maid of honour, and
given what the size of the wedding party will be, I’ll only have two bridesmaids.
Of all the people in this house, I have known you the longest, and so…well, Emily, would you be willing to be
my maid of honour?
Emily:
*excited* OF COURSE!!! But what will Ruhe and Abigail think, or Julia?
Martha:
Well, I need one other bridesmaid. I think I will ask Abby simply to do her the honour of refusing, because I believe
she will. I think Ruhe will understand, given that we have only recently become
close, so I think my other bridesmaid will be Julia.
Emily:
Why do you think Abby will decline?
Martha:
Because…I know her. She’s the groom’s sister, and so she already feels like she has an important place in the wedding,
she won’t want another one.
Emily:
Martha, are you sure?
Martha:
Pretty darn.
*End Scene*
Scene
5:
*Peter
and Abigail are still in the living room*
*Enter
Martha*
Martha:
Hey Pete!
Peter:
Hey Martha!
Martha:
Peter, can I borrow your sister for a minute?
Peter:
Sure!
Abigail:
*laughingly* What, I don’t get a
say in this?
*Exit
Abigail and Martha*
*Enter
Ruhe*
Peter:
Ruhe!
Ruhe:
*mutedly* Hey Pete! Congratulations on the engagement!
Peter:
*happily* Thanks! *suddenly worried* Hey,
Ruhe, is everything alright, you seem, I dunno, kind of down.
Ruhe:
*distractedly* No, no, not at all!
Peter:
Is everything okay with you and *pauses
to think* David?
Ruhe:
Oh yeah, everything between us is fine,
it’s going splendidly, especially given how long we’ve been going out.
Peter:
What is it now, almost four months?
Ruhe:
Yeah…nearly four months!
Peter:
So…what’s on your mind, spill!
Ruhe:
It’s completely foolish!
Peter:
Yeah, you’re my sister’s best
friend, you know what she’s like, and I’m used to fools follies! Spill!
Ruhe:
I don’t really…
Peter:
Okay, I won’t push it *turns to leave*
Ruhe:
*suddenly* Peter, wait!
Peter:
What’s up?
Ruhe:
When I tell you it’s foolish, I absolutely
mean it!
Peter:
‘Kay…
Ruhe:
It’s just that, well, you’re
getting married! It’s great and all, but I mean Martha’s become a
really good friend recently, and I’ve known you all my life, but suddenly, I don’t know where I fit!
Peter:
*sympathetically* Ruhe, come on, you have
to know you fit where you always have!
Ruhe:
But everything is about to change, isn’t
it?
Peter:
It absolutely doesn’t have to! Come here!
*they hug*
Ruhe, you know you’ll always be like
a second sister to me.
*End Scene*
Scene
6:
*Abigail
and Martha in the hallway outside the living room*
Martha:
Abby, I wanted to ask you if you would
like to be my bridesmaid at the wedding.
Abigail:
Oh Martha!
Well, I am flattered, but…
Martha:
*hiding the fact that she knows what Abigail
is about to say* But what?
Abigail:
Honestly, given that Peter is my brother
and you are about to become my sister in law, while I’m thrilled and honoured by your proposal, I have to refuse.
Martha:
Why?
Abigail:
Because, you have so many other friends
in this house it would be wrong of me to be so selfish, so I am thankful for your offer, but I must decline…my future
sister!
Martha:
*happily* Your honesty is appreciated my future sister!
*End Scene*
Scene
7:
*Peter
and Martha have left to go discuss the nuptials while Abigail and Ruhe sit together in the living room talking*
Abigail:
My goodness today has been exciting!
Ruhe:
You said it girl!
Abigail:
So, how’re you holding up to all
of this?
Ruhe:
What do you mean?
Abigail:
Well, I know you’ve been worried
in the past when Pete’s gotten into a serious relationship about where you fit, and well, this is the most serious so,
I thought you might be worried.
Ruhe:
That just proves how long we’ve been
friends!
Abigail:
What does?
Ruhe:
The fact that you can read my mind!
Abigail:
What the devil do you mean?
Ruhe:
That I did have problems, but I talked
to your brother today and well, I guess we worked it all out.
Abigail:
Good, I thought you might do something
along those lines, when did you talk to him?
Ruhe:
Oh, when you and Martha went to talk about
whatever you went to talk about. By the way, what was it about?
Abigail:
*awkwardly* Oh nothing, she just wanted
to ask me a favour.
Ruhe:
*shrewdly* To be a bridesmaid?
Abigail:
How did you know?
Ruhe:
She and I discussed it earlier and we both
agreed it would be more appropriate for someone else to be her bridesmaid! So,
did you accept?
Abigail:
No, I didn’t think it would be right.
Ruhe:
I didn’t think you would.
*End Scene*
Scene
8:
*Peter
and Martha are in the kitchen discussing the upcoming wedding*
Peter:
So it’s agreed the guests are just
going to be our parents and the people in this house?
Martha:
Yes, but I wonder if we shouldn’t
invite Ruhe’s parents, you’ve known her forever…
Peter:
Yes, but given how small the wedding is,
it wouldn’t be right, when it’s just our parents and a few friends.
Martha:
I
suppose…
Peter:
We’ll let my sister have the big
wedding!
*Enter
John*
Martha:
How wonderful would it be if Abby and John got married soon?
John:
Well,
*Martha jumps*
it might be marvelous, but let me plan
my own timing, Peter planned his by himself and seemed to do just fine!
Peter:
Thanks John, by the way, can I go talk
to you for a moment.
John:
Sure!
*the two
men go to leave*
Martha:
You know, it might be easier if I just
left.
Peter:
Baby, are you sure?
Martha:
Yup!
*Exit
Martha*
*John sits*
John:
‘Kay Pete, so what’s up?
Peter:
Oh not much, but given that you’re
my best guy friend…
John:
Yeah?
Peter:
Well, I was wondering if you would do me
the honour of…
John:
*cutting Peter off* No Pete, you already
proposed once today, I will not be your wife!
Peter:
*laughing* No John, if you would do me
the honour of being my best man!
John:
*in some amount of shock* Of course! Does that mean your sister will be maid of honour?
Peter:
No, she’s not in the wedding party,
*proudly* she refused the invitation!
John:
Oh…well, who is maid of honour then?
Peter:
Emily.
John:
*stunned* EMILY?
Peter:
Yes, do you have a problem with that?
John:
*laughing* Not at all, I’m just surprised,
that’s all!
Peter:
I don’t know why.
John:
Neither do I.
*End Scene*
Scene
9:
*Julia
is sitting on her bed reading as Martha enters*
Martha:
Hey Julia, can I come in?
Julia:
Yeah, sure!
Martha:
I just wanted to ask you a quick favour.
Julia:
What is it?
Martha:
Well, see for the wedding there are two
bridesmaids, Emily is one of them, I was hoping you would be the other.
Julia:
Seriously?
Martha:
Absolutely!
Julia:
Martha, I would absolutely love to thank
you for asking!
Martha:
My absolute pleasure!
